.In the U.S. judges are not supposed to be divisive or non-divisive. They are supposed to follow the law. We don’t vote for federal judges because they are supposed to be non-political.

They were also supposed to be approved by Senators elected by state legislatures, but the 17th Amendment ruined that protection from populist passions.
