What really stands out to me is that NYT does not condone her actions ONLY in that they "served to feed the vitriol" and not that they're inherently appalling. In other words, if her detractors would have subsided, her racist statements would have been perfectly acceptable.

funny thing is the (white) folks white-knighting justifying her comments, denying her ex post facto "truth" of regret for her "unacceptable" posts. given that she would certainly be one of those defenders if her job wasnt at stake, its both insincere and patronizing at same time.
