I find that I am still a jerk. I am trying to avoid a powerful impulse to correct the man’s grammar.

Changing the motive behind the conversation is key IMO. If your motive is to understand , you are going to approach the conversation very differently than if your motive is simply spewing talking points or opinions that aren't even your own.
