From a basic-principles perspective, that is what I would expect to see (seeing avoidance as a perpetuating factor). But the study is quite limited in that only looks at the responses of non-traumatised individuals.

The solution is to add "trigger warning" randomly throughout dialogue to diminish the impact of the term in general. ;)

I stumbled across this article a couple hours ago. I agree, the key message to get across is not only are trigger warnings not helpful, they actually "undermine emotional resilience" in those who need help
