Yes both are important. But you can't judge the pace of current progress on the basis of a utopia that YOU conceived and can't even be certain that said utopia would be objectively better than the current.

Cultures and conditions of the past are unfairly judged against the present, while the present is contrasted only against a hypothetical utopia that can remain a utopia only so long as it remains hypothetical. This kind of thinking is everywhere even though it is a dead end.

On the contrary. I'd say the rapid progress we're seeing is indication it *works*. If we only measure towards the utter horrors of the past, almost any level of achievement, technological or societal, will just breed complacency and stagnation.
