It is amazing, the effect that a loud, shrill, persistent minority (aided by the media) can have on the political elite. Disheartening, too. What recourse? Should the quieter, calmer, easygoing majority change its' tactics? Would that work without media support?

It is always the way it goes. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Saw the same in Nazi Germany. The Nazi party was the minority, but was the most active and loud until they control everything, and the peaceful majority was irrelevant.
