People often become fixated with lack of relative change and ignore the absolute change (i.e. People all over the world are better than they were 200 years ago, regardless of any gap between groups of people).

At least one hurdle is being overcome. Would you prefer that the infants die instead because you fear that it won't be sustainable. Birth rates should decline in Africa not that infant mortality should stay high as it was.
