My obsession is to understand how the brain and the immune system communicate in health/disease. Opinions are my own.

It is not about being nice. It is about not being an asshole.

I would like to suggest universities request two additional factors on applicants CV: t-factor for how many tweets with at least t number of likes and rt-factor for how many tweets with at least rt number of retrweets they succeeded to tweet during their grad and postdoc years.

Advice to postdoc candidates: after you visit a lab for interviews, make sure to follow up within 24h thanking the PI and key lab members. Write individual emails, even if it’s a copy/paste. Even if your experience wasn’t great, make sure to express appreciation for their time.

Just finished an autobiography of Peter Medawar. Mixed feelings. Unfortunately, nothing on brain grafts. But I loved his gratitude to American funding agencies, who he thinks saved the post war European research enterprise.

I’m puzzled (troubled?) to see some PIs go in details describing their positive emotions in response to their mentee successes. It’s a baseline to be super happy for our trainees. Tweet, tag and congratulate them. It’s about them not your emotions!

In my opinion is exceptionally important in dissemination of knowledge but what’s being disseminated and how it is credited needs to be (somehow, and I don’t know how!) regulated!

Hmm... nobody before thought that ‘publications’ like this would be an issue with free non-reviewed repository of ‘scientific’ material? How about the use of this platform for scooping? Should we reevaluate the gains and losses of a platform like this and refine it and its uses?

Or maybe there was a selective reading of the prior literature? Michal Schwartz’s lab (and many others) has been showing the protective role immune cells (including microglia) after CNS injury for the past quarter century.

One way to ‘succeed’ in science (i.e. being invited to talks/feeling important) is to pick a cool story that someone else is developing, do sloppy experiments and ‘prove’ it wrong. Those driven by ‘fame’ instead of curiosity should certainly take this route. Success guaranteed.

The best part at today’s research achievement dinner was a fantastic talk by Ed Egelman - amazing science intertwined with exceptional humor.
