Thats not an excuse. If they were afraid to lose influence it shows they had none at all. If they were considered influential they would have been listened to. Just as culpable.

CBI experienced the same anecdotally. It’s Orban, Trump and Putin’s model; agree, however stupid, or get frozen out. It’s the opposite of “talking truth to power”.
