Nah. It looks weak, on such an important subject. Essentially just leaving the fate of No Deal to the Tories. They've already abstained on a few votes, they don't want to start getting a reputation for it. Just make it clear that the Deal is shit, but that there's no alternative

And backing something you know is shit looks strong? Come on.

Jon, how many Brexit headbangers do you think there are in the ERG and Covid Recovery Group who will vote against? They have a genuine chance of ‘winning’ by getting No Deal. What happens to the Tory party then?
-
Not enough to down a Deal. It’s not even binding anyway!

Ah, but apparently politicians can't be seen to 'not have an opinion' on something (which is what abstaining looks like) - so they'd rather have a bad opinion than none.
-
It’s a tricky one for Starmer given the huge losses in the red wall Labour suffered in 2019, largely because of their Brexit position. Abstaining is what I’d prefer them to do, but it gives the Tories ammunition.

And risk perpetual opposition ever after. Many of their former supporters in red wall will equate abstention to Remain. That debate has to be over (for now).
-
Hence my point that they’re thinking the voters are stupid.

And if the Government is defeated because Labour abstain what then? It's just enabling no deal.
