(And don’t get me wrong: I sort of understand Starmer’s tactics, from a narrow point of view. But what the government is (not) doing is genuinely dangerous. But opposition is nowhere... For the UK’s representative democracy that’s not healthy.)

Well, the result of an advisory opinion poll, so corrupted that May’s QC admitted had it been binding the result would have been quashed, has been allowed to determine the country’s future. We’re not a functioning democracy. Less so day by day, as crime is paying.

The party system (and FPTP) turn representative democracy into Oligarchy. Boris made that very clear when he deselected people who disagreed with him. Effectively, he showed that nobody can be elected unless they do what a small group instruct them to do.

So there isn’t going to be a vote on the deal?

The problem is not so much the failure of the Commons itself, antiquated as it is, but of the system by which MPs were elected. Only under FPTP does one party get 56% of the seats on under 44% of the vote, & with it an unassailable majority and the right to ignore all other views

In what way could it really be said to work anywhere? Strictly speaking.

To pick the obvious examples, I would say things work better in Germany and New Zealand at the moment, but they are not the British system of course.

Why would any government want to change an electoral process that essentially makes them a permanent fixture? Why would opposition parties not want to campaign for one of the many other options used within the UK?https://www.parliament.uk/about/how/elections-and-voting/voting-systems/ …

Too many Labour MPs are also profiting from safe seats. There is a lot of personal interest also on the opposition benches to keep FPTP.
