We need to talk about blame and responsibility when it comes to - from a pro-EU / pro-Remain point of view.

I’m not sure why so much time is spent analysing Boris Johnson’s speeches. We should know by now that nothing he says is a reliable guide to what he plans to do.

  4. All this mulling over in my mind (& not much on Twitter) for the past month or so... is now resulting in a lot of blog posts! New today: "When Britain’s pro-EU campaigners say resist, reform, rejoin… they ought to apply the first two to the UK"

While we wait for the presentation of both sides' plans for Brexit negotiations, a quick reminder of what theory says about whether to negotiate PDF:

  7. (Btw if you turn left past the duty free shop there’s a movable barrier that allows you to skip it. But I didn’t do that. Oh no!)

  8. Seriously what do you think you are? Ryanair? Compulsory Duty Free to walk through at Gare du Midi? How about, you know, focusing on being an efficient train service?

‘EU reneges on deal’ turns out to mean ‘EU maintains its longstanding position to which the UK agreed in the Political Declaration’. Not quite the same thing.

  10. The rule for talks from now on: it’s *always* easier for 🇬🇧 to just blame 🇪🇺 for anything and everything, whether justified or not, than it is to face up to the costs and trade offs inherent in Brexit. This will determine everything 🇬🇧 says and does.

The Number 10 brief is no alignment, no concessions, no ECJ, and we want exactly the same deal as the EU gave to Canada. Also that the EU offered this then took it away. On this basis no deal (and also probably no deal with the US) and serious economic damage. Let's unpack... 1/

The government literally wrote in one of their referendum documents explaining the options outside that this would happen and you all said the government were lying and it was all project fear. It's not the EU's fault you didn't listen.

  13. Also this is why I’m not going to follow Brexit as closely from now on. Until UK faces up to the trade-offs inherent in the position it’s put itself in, I’m not devoting brain power to analysing the next stupid statement from Raab or Johnson.

The political declaration on the future relationship, which the UK signed up to, contains four references to customs checks. One might also point out that the UK chose to leave the EU.

We will stay calm, of course. & constructive. Feelings are a bit confusing me though: when an EU member state unfairly blames EU institutions it is a source of sadness. When a third country does so it is very different. Too soon for me to define what should replace sadness here.

Yes the political declaration is non-binding, but Boris Johnson did agree: 1. the level playing field/no unfair competitive advantages; 2. the ECJ is the sole arbiter of EU law. Lots to be negotiated, but gov cannot claim these are bolts from blue.

Refreshingly honest of the Telegraph to reveal that they weren't reporting news, or informing their readership but rather waging a war against the EU for 40 years.

Back at one of my favourite places in Brussels for the first time in almost 11 years - the Maison Cauchié. Open the first Sunday of every month. More about it on my blog!
