    Triassic shield shrimp! Also, Wupatki National Monument is a fascinating place to visit.

    Well this is just incredible. A season of heavy rains at Wupatki National Monument have brought these gorgeous wriggly crustaceans known as triopsidae roaring back to life. Their eggs can survive decades in dry soil. And then one summer of deep, saturating rain, and boom. LIFE!

    I was taught in microbiology that new mutations typically reduce transmissibility for viruses. What we are seeing with COVID is very different. Virology peeps: Is this a general property of coronaviruses?

    South Korea’s Disease Control and Prevention Agency said Tuesday that it had recorded at least two cases of the new coronavirus delta plus variant, which some experts believe to be more transmissible than the original delta variant.

    I wonder if we could model viruses to estimate their most optimized final form, where we could estimate how much more evolutionary headroom remains in terms of infectiousness and severity. Variant predictor.

    I think recall votes are inherently undemocratic because of how turnout practically functions. Have an impeachment process, have term lengths set appropriately, and let the voters have their say in the regular election.

    I see America is now doing the "majority of cases were vaccinated!!!🚨😱" story. It's alarmist reporting, needlessly scares people, and also demonstrates an inability to do math(s). Majority of cases being vaxxed tells us literally nothing about vaccine efficacy. Here's why:

    NEW: people worry when they hear "40% of hospitalisations are fully vaxxed", but this chart shows that's actually good news. The more people you vaccinate, the higher their share of hospitalisations, but the *total* number in hospital is a fraction of what it would otherwise be

    Every single communications app should have easy schedule send functionality. It's so helpful for communicating with people in other timezones for when I have a thought to share RIGHT NOW but don't want it arriving at 3am.

    I still remember – clear as day – and I crossing through Times Square over 25 years ago and Jackie Mason crossing toward us, and Brently, ecstatic, says “OMG Jackie Mason I’m a huge–“ and Jackie Mason says “HelloMyFriend!!”, shakes his hand, and doesn’t break a step.

    I got to hear Professor Weinberg speak when I was studying astronomy at the University of Texas. A towering figure in modern physics and an amazing thinker.

    Steven Weinberg, the 1979 Nobel laureate for physics, died today. A delightful companion who loved theater, he could recite the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins by heart, and wrote profoundly about the mysteries of creation. He loved life and left it reluctantly. He’ll be missed.

    Moving from California to New Zealand, I feel like a time traveler who arrives just before disaster strikes. I have this urge to warn everyone about THE FUTURE, MARTY! Through a combination of competence and luck, NZ has managed to avoid it and I hope that holds.

    Suspending the trans-Tasman bubble was appropriately risk-averse. Maybe we can keep Delta out at the border, but complacency on scanning and testing within NZ means an outbreak could easily spread undetected and unmitigated for days, if not weeks.

    Wherever we go, we scan QR codes using the contact tracing app, but observe no one else do so. Kiwis, I gotta tell you, as someone who has spent the last *15 months* at the equivalent of NZ’s Alert Level 3, I urge you to scan. So small an effort for so big a reward.

    We’re out of MIQ in NZ. It is a bit overwhelming to be indoors, surrounded by people, no distancing, no masks. In a good way.
