We live in a society where there is no point in proposing an interesting & novel solution to some Big Problem unless you're rich enough to personally bankroll its implementation. I've been following this same dynamic in the gun control wars for years now.

The /only/ acceptable proposals for doing anything about guns are from a list of ideas that was put together in the 80's -- ammo bans, feature bans, point-of-sale background checks, smart guns, etc. Even the MSD kids' list of "new" reforms was just rehashed 80's gun control.

If you propose something even mildly novel that's not on that list, it's not possible for anyone, anywhere to take it seriously. Those of us who've tried know this. You can't even point to something some other country is doing (like Switzerland) & expect traction...

...because the idea has to come from The List of approved ideas that circulates in The Blob. This was the attraction of Yang, even to those of us who didn't actually support him -- he was at least someone who'd champion novel ideas.
