The main lossy mode has the following features: - DCT with variable block sizes (2x2 to 32x32, including rectangular ones like 8x32) and adaptive quantization (with a Butteraugli-driven perceptually optimizing encoder) - Uses an absolute, perceptually motivated color space (XYB)

- Extensive progressive capabilities: DC can be encoded as a separate subimage which itself can be encoded progressively, for e.g. 1:16 and LQIP previews. AC can be done in multiple passes (like in JPEG).

- Great screen content coding tools: repetitive or non-photographic elements like glyphs of a font can be encoded separately (e.g. using a non-DCT mode) as a "sprite sheet" subimage, which can then be added as 'patches' to the main image. This is great for e.g. screenshots.

The lossless/non-DCT mode is very flexible: - Progressive and lossy are possible (using the Squeeze transform from FUIF) - 'Patches' can also be used - Works well for any kind of image content (photo, synthetic, mixed)

Both modes also offer: - Parallel decode - Efficient cropped decode - Large range of speed/density trade-offs - ICC color profile compression - Up to 24 bits per channel - Alpha, Depth, Spot colors, arbitrary extra channels

Then there's a dedicated mode for JPEG recompression, based on Brunsli, but also allowing parallel/cropped decode and e.g. adding an alpha channel to an existing JPEG. Alternatively, for recompression of 4:4:4 JPEGs you can also use the main var-DCT mode where all blocks are 8x8.

Just compiled JPEG XL. What's "modular-group" and "jpeg-group"? is "cjpegxl" the correct encoder to use, or is there some other binary?
