I won't name the individual that the spam came from, but the company was @consortia. I believe that "specialist recruiters" should do better than this. I believe recruitment *can* be a valuable industry, but that too many recruiters don't pay enough attention to who they contact.

Reply from recruiter then misspelled my name as "John" and claimed I had Ruby listed as one of my "key skills". I can only think that they found that I have a bronze Ruby badge on Stack Overflow. (42 answers out of 34,882 total contain the Ruby tag. Hardly "key" is it?)

Looks like it was an endorsement from someone else - have gone through my profile and deleted a load of skills I've supposedly been given. Also edited my profile to say "Happy at Google; do not contact with other jobs." I suspect that will be ignored.

Recruiters don't really care about the content on the profile, as shown (hilariously) here:https://twitter.com/j4n0/status/1125380024733925377 …

I suspect dealing with recruiters is the closest us cis white guys get to experiencing what it’s like to be a woman on the internet. Even that tiny glimpse into the abyss is enough for me.
