I’m looking at applying that to schools and student behaviour. The difference is that ‘poor behaviour’ is public already but the Gilligan research may have something to say in extremes cases. Your book has made me think a lot.

Because if a more narrow space equals less shame, it seems like that would be a healthier way to live. But it also sounds like it would have to mean you have less of a private self.

And the idea that shame is the public "revealing" to a person who they "really" are; therefore, seen as an edifying public service, as opposed to empathy, which they'd call the "public assistance" of emotions.
