Yes! I believe our shame-worthiness often lies in the space between who we are and how we present ourselves to the world. Jonah Lehrer's space was as wide as the Grand Canyon. Max Mosley's was narrowed to nothing.https://twitter.com/cockneyteacher/status/984156814605471744 …

I like the idea of shame being the gap between our self and public image. Perceptive - and Moseley didn’t seem to see or accept a difference between them!

what's the difference between shame and guilt, really?

Brene Brown explains it by saying that guilt is "I've done something bad" and shame is "I *am* bad."

I’m looking at applying that to schools and student behaviour. The difference is that ‘poor behaviour’ is public already but the Gilligan research may have something to say in extremes cases. Your book has made me think a lot.

Do you think both extremes are unhealthy?

Because if a more narrow space equals less shame, it seems like that would be a healthier way to live. But it also sounds like it would have to mean you have less of a private self.

That's a good way of describing politicians in the main, and how they can present themselves day after day, presuming they aren't psychopaths.

And the idea that shame is the public "revealing" to a person who they "really" are; therefore, seen as an edifying public service, as opposed to empathy, which they'd call the "public assistance" of emotions.
