My liver gave out in 2017. I found out the hard way that 30 days in a transplant icu with 24 hour dialysis costs about 1.5 million dollars. I had good private insurance, but I'll still be paying for that for a long time. And that kind of thing could happen to anyone.

Doesn’t even have to be 3 “very” bad months. Sometimes, 1 awful month followed by a couple of just “bad” months is enough, depending on where you live & what you do. Still have very few laws to protect people who are defrauded, victims of identity theft, or just injured/ ill.

I usually say three because people won't wrap their heads around less., But it can be a bad week, honestly.

It’s taken me 12 years to save 3 months of “living expenses “ should I loose my job. I need to save 3 more months, so it should only take me 12 more years. FYI, I pay for EVERYTHING in my life.

After my husband left 10y ago it took until maybe 3 years ago before I had anything like savings. I was extremely close to becoming an undocumented homeless immigrant, w/Master’s degree and a great resume. It can happen to ANYONE. And even near-misses take years to recover from

When we finally managed to finalize the divorce a couple of years ago, I saw his salary on the legal docs. It’s more than twice what I make. Not that I’d be making as much as him if I hadn’t had that crisis, but it was certainly an interesting comparison
