This lack of interest means that after a year of so - when reform gets hard - the government simply gives in. And nothing changes. Bad news for the 50% not doing A levels. But there will no marches, petitions. Nothing.

The problem is as it always has been. FE is a place for "other people's children." MPs in particular fail to understand it because they are overwhelmingly from the traditional university route.

Interestingly people in the UK tend to view technical education relatively positively. BUT also are relatively unlikely to actually recommend it to someone they know. i.e. the view is that it's for other people's children.pic.twitter.com/KsSyRL1KP3

Also adults in the UK are relatively unlikely to hold the view that it's for less able children (though most still have that view).pic.twitter.com/oephYt6LFt

When I left school in the 1980's after A Levels, some of friends went on to train as nurses. To train as SRN you needed A levels, O levels to train as an SEN. Now you need a degree. I understand that you also need a degree to become a paramedic.

Really interesting thread. Seems like there needs to be a Step Forward in technical training.

Part of the problem is the focus on qualification frameworks, in my 12 years we had the NQF, QCF and now RQF. Changing the shelving while the product stays the same. All while pretending quals are a “free market”.

Technical education has been undervalued since the Industrial Revolution. The class system in England meant (and to an extent still means) the upwardly mobile distancing themselves from 'trade'.

You're generalising, of course. There IS good practice in technical education & training in the UK, and it's instructive to have a look at it.

Now you've left DfE, if you wanted to re-train as a seagoing officer, you would almost certainly do a 3-year sandwich programme (a 'cadetship') based on an HND or FD, with a year's practical learning at sea.
