Gone with the Wind was the first film for which an African American won an Oscar. It has now been cancelled.

"HBO Max said Gone With the Wind will eventually return to the service with a "discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions" of Black people and slavery."

You can do that without removing it. I’m concerned society seems to be going down the path of “cancel first, ask questions later”.

Gone with the Wind hasn't been cancelled, though. It's a film that's been around for over 80 years and consistently criticised for depictions of black people during that time, and it's been temporarily removed from a single streaming platform.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not holding HBO up as paragons of social virtue and no doubt they see a commercial imperative in this. But it's also a timely move worth debating and not worthy of outrage.

Fair points and there are grey areas on this. My concern is we move quickly from removing statues glorifying slave profiteers (a good thing IMO) to trying to thoroughly erase parts of our culture and history. We can’t just create a clean slate, history will always be there.
Het laden lijkt wat langer te duren.
