Often find myself defending the BBC. I believe it remains a worthwhile and trustworthy institution in a world of too much fake news. But it can only fulfill that role if its major news programmes adhere strictly to impartiality. Newsnight failed that requirement last night.https://twitter.com/ashcowburn/status/1265406013961842691 …

It's demonstrable he broke the rules. Polling shows a significant majority of people believe he did too. Impartiality in journalism doesn't mean that if one person is lying and the other is telling the truth you just shrug and move on.https://twitter.com/lewis_goodall/status/1265441463283978240 …

Even as an impartial broadcaster, it's beholden on the BBC to hold authorities - in particular the government - to account.

I disagree that it is clear he broke the rules. I accept that is a minority view that he didn’t but one of the key things about the BBC is that it doesn’t just parrot the majority view. Hold to account - yes, have a presenter read out one side of an argument as fact - no.

Respectfully, this is not a case of agreeing or disagreeing. Here's the full list of 'reasonable excuses' set out in the regulations that were in force at the time. His reasons are not part of this.pic.twitter.com/KAeqCHlocU

It’s not a full list, it’s a non-exhaustative list of examples hence use of the word “includes”. Like I say, I’m not saying I’m definitely right but it is open to debate, hence why there are lots of people on tv and in the press debating it.
