Ok bit late to the party but have now read the Withdrawal Agreement. Few thoughts on the backstop issue: Yes if backstop became live it would have effect of being “out but in”. HOWEVER, it is clearly designed never to become live. #Brexit
Brexiteers therefore (understandably) have concerns the transition could be never-ending (another “in but out position). However the key objective is set out in Articles 1(3) and 1(4)of the NI protocol.pic.twitter.com/fh3Xj0zjRr

It’s in the interest of both parties to satisfy these asap. If UK believes (as most Brexiteers do) that this can be done by technology (either existing or in existence by end of transition) then UK will be able to serve notice under article 20 of the Protocolpic.twitter.com/a2biP8gYoR

As noted the EU has no interest in binding the UK into the backstop status and so would have no good reason to dispute if the objective was indeed achieved.

Overall it is important to view both UK and EU as rational actors in this process. Both have much to gain and lose. I understand on paper the deal presents problems for some Brexiteers but you’ve got to look at it in the context of both the UK and EU’s interests.

The provisions causing issue will never become reality. And regardless both parties have committed to use best endeavours to reach a solution in line with the political declaration.

To sum up my waffle, the deal is a neat way to achieve Brexit in a smooth manner, and is eminently better than No Deal (the other realistic option). We need to stop viewing the EU as an adversary in this process and more as a partner in our future relationship.
