If the SNP can confirm some facilities are safe, logically they must have a balanced budget. But - so far - they’ve refused to publish it in advance. So Councillors will have to vote on a budget they see for the first time when they sit down in their seats for the budget meeting.

This is on the back of a feeble 2-question consultation issued just three weeks out. Greens have consistently called for improvements to the budget process, but the SNP haven’t delivered any meaningful change, despite being elected on a mandate of openness and accountability.

Some will argue they’ve been busy with sorting equal pay. I don’t doubt that - but that’s not an adequate excuse. If anything, knowing the likely financial impacts of settlement, they should have started proper budget engagement even earlier.

The upshot is we won’t be entering budget talks. We will be constructive and ensure the city passes a budget but this lack of transparency is not okay. Our city’s budget is the most important decision of the year. People deserve to see the administration’s proposals in advance.
