This week we’ve tried to bring a motion to next week’s City Administration Committee but that’s not been accepted on procedural grounds. We still think there’s a way the decision could be changed by the Full Council and we’re working hard to bring that about.

We’ve listened to parents and carers and it’s clear that there is real anxiety over nursery fee increases, with some being forced to give up their jobs, or get into debt just to pay for childcare. We want a resolution on this issue before the Council goes into summer recess.

From the start, Greens opposed the SNP proposals and we tabled our own budget amendment for a much smaller increase to £3/hour, but the SNP chose not to accept it. We took on board planned mitigations but it’s now clear that some parents could still be forced into hardship.

We have met with the administration this week and advised them of our position. We hope parties will now work together to bring about a resolution that can secure support across the Council.
