Who out there would find a Computer Architecture blog or podcast interesting? What if I arranged to do one in collaboration with folks like , , , ?

  2. Still got it. Yesterday’s run reminded me that I need to crank back up the mileage. Planning to enter another marathon this year, but this time in a NUVIA T-shirt. I do some of my best times when imagining I’m chasing CISC architectures for hours at a time

After the episode, I've been hooked on to the podcast, listening from the start now.

Literally every time I read "open source cloud native tooling" I read it as "open source cloud native trolling"

  6. My own solution was to stop paying membership. I respect the GPL but the organization is so out of touch it’s sad

  7. A reasonable argument can be made about wanting to have all firmware be open, but this is never the argument that they actually make in these cases

  8. I always found this hilarious about the FSF philosophy. There’s no difference whether you have embedded firmware on a card, or load it using request_firmware at runtime. Unless you can’t tell the difference. In which case definitely go making policies for folks. Le giant sigh.

  9. Every so often I remind myself that I should write up a description of what will happen to more projects ahead of time, then post a SHA hash to prove later. As I often used to say “I can only predict the future, others have to listen”. But “told ya so” is fun sometimes.

  13. This all works in the absence of competition. You turn the industry into docile supplicants and they’ll go along with it. Until you get actual competition. Then you have to actually try again. But they’ve forgotten how.

  14. Nobody has any idea what this stuff actually costs, and they’re all hooked on it. The most nuts I’ve seen is SC. I love SC as an event but those who run booths are *addicted* to Intel money. MWC is similarly full of folks taking money from Intel for their “independent” booth

  15. But Intel doesn’t remember this. They’re used to a model in which they sponsor their way into whatever they want. See all the glitzy events. I often ask folks at conferences if they have any idea what a coffee stand (assumed to be at every break by now) actually costs even.

Before I left IBMHat I gave them a bunch of advice about how to do what they did for the PC in many other markets. They have to listen tho.

One year ago I moved out of the first place I ever lived in the US (and then stayed for 13 years). This was the last time I closed that door. A lot changes in a year: new place, new job, new car, and I got engaged too for good measure. Still wear the Red Hat hat tho.

It’s literally as if they’ve forgotten how they came to dominate the x86 market

Exactly. You win a market by creating a sticky layer of software that runs across many compatible systems, then increment the hardware. This stuff is all doomed from day one.

Ok, this is take number two. Tomorrow (02/02/2020) is a palindrome and is the first such -global- occurrence in 909 years (11/11/1111). The next time this will happen appears to be in 101 years (12/12/2121). (global = works for everyone day/month and month/day)
