He had spent years arguing for full legalisation. Every single argument I made he batted away, because they all came from a model that was both paternalistic and puritanical: namely, that the state should exercise the power to overrule personal choices and pleasure.

In the end I had nothing left. From that day to this, I have not heard a single compelling argument to criminalise the use of drugs.

It should be treated as a public health issue, not criminal justice issue. And of course, some recreational drugs are no different to gambling, something society is still perfectly comfortable with under controlled conditions

Which is what they are trying to do in Scotland, however, as drug policy is controlled by Westminster, they won't permit any changes.

It is about 'Grown Up' conversations.... prohibition adds to the excitement of doing something that society deems you should not be doing. Substances are not for me, but I understand people that wish to imbibe. Make it safe, regulate it, and allow people that wish to, enjoy it.

It's the one size fits all approach that's baffling for me when the drugs themselves are so very different. Eg giving people heroin in a clinic might work because users are essentially docile unless they can't get hold of any, but the same approach wouldn't work for crystal meth.

(And the Class ABC system doesn't really make that kind of distinction or leave any room for tailoring the laws to reduce specific harms.)

Bear in mind that ethanol is a drug but completely accepted by society - in fact you have to justify why you don’t drink - and it shows what a ridiculous system it is

Laws & policing only function through consent, and the proliferation of drugs in society make it impossible & futile to effectively police, laws should not be put in place to create criminals from people exercising their free choices, involving no harm to be caused to others
-
Laws which are broken by so many, are pointless & useless laws, often put in place by the naive, ignorant and puritanical/paternal More people are harmed due to prohibition, than through the simple free trade & consumption of drugs
