A DNR means doctors will not try to bring you back to life after you die. It does not mean they will actively speed up your death. You need to be young & fit to recover from resuscitation. Most people who die aren't fit enough to recover - that's why they died in the first place.

It doesn’t matter. A person has to chose that, otherwise doctors should try because that is ‘usual treatment’. Personally I have a DNR but it has to be a free choice of the individual, not forced by others

I can't read all this because it's behind the paywall, but the first few lines are enough.

This one should work. This has been happening since March. The BBC reported on it in April. It's disgusting its taken this long to be really noticed by the general publichttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8656957/NHS-told-care-homes-not-resuscitate-orders-residents-height-Covid-crisis.html …

My 95 year old dad has been in and out of hospital over the past few months but not because of COVID-19. Nevertheless, the hospital doctor said they put him down as DNR because it would not be ‘humane’ to try. I get it but who makes the final decision? He said he would want resus

Absolutely. The cull of the elderly. Disgusting. No compassion. Happened to my mother. Sadly she passed away in April. Doctors said nothing they could do Wouldn’t even get an oxygen tank to help her breathe as there were none in the community. No test for Covid before or after.

Maria this is so sad. I can't tell how angry I am the way this government has treated the elderly and care homes in general

DNR always emotive topic& difficult to call. Is it better to let a frail 95-year-old drift away with dignity in her own bed, relative/ carer holding her hand or bundle her into attempted resuscitation, strangers rushing to insert IV lines / ventilator tubes /attach monitors?
-
But it's not just 95-yr-olds! It's disabled people and autistic people who have a good quality of life and WANT TO LIVE

Nothing wrong with a DNR notice. Both my parents had them, were still treated in hospitals and lived into their 90s. I will have one when the time is right. It doesn't mean 'no treatment', it means do not resuccitate if the patient's heart stops.

But that decision shouldn't be taken out of the hands of the patient! If the patient is in a state where they are unable to consent then it goes to the family. This has and is a death sentence for disabled + other vulnerable people who COULD RECOVER
