Today, Troy McAlister was arraigned on numerous felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated charges for the deaths of Hanako Abe and Elizabeth Platt. My office and I are distraught over this horrific tragedy.

Yesterday, I had a nearly 90-minute heart-wrenching meeting with Ms. Abe's mother, a woman of great strength and kindness. I am meeting with Ms. Platt's family later this week. My office and our Victim Services team are committed to supporting both families.

Although of course no one predicted this tragedy, it is true that my office, and other justice partners, could have done things differently, which might have avoided this terrible outcome.

I have to start with what we could have done differently in house. We are carefully reviewing what happened and how the District Attorney’s Office can work to prevent tragedies like this from occurring in the future.

I have to agree with this. Maybe police needs to be prosecuted to, but at the moment it feels that there are other priorities.

Yes! To be clear, I’m not advocating for police immunity. They should be held accountable if they abuse power. What Chesa is doing is not that though
