Forgiveness is sort of a backwards concept, like phlogiston (which ~= "the absence of oxygen"). Forgiveness ~= "the absence of resentment". So if you don't resent in the first place, then you can reach a state of "forgiveness" without actually performing an act of "forgiving".

I'm not sure if the move itself is the addition of something or the removal of something, but whatever comes to mind when you close your eyes and think something like, "I forgive myself" is the thing. Softening, easing, letting go, and importantly, being able to move forwards.

Without forgiveness there's a way I can get stuck and becoming unwilling to make decisions that might be later regarded as mistakes. With forgiveness in the picture, I do the best I can, take chances, and maybe "make mistakes". Afterwards, if needed, I forgive myself and move on.
