Ah, who could forget 2001, when deficit-conscious Republicans asked for a trigger that would halt the tax cuts if surplus forecasts fell short? They didn't get one, voted yes anyway, and we were back in deficit within a year.https://twitter.com/CaptainPAYGO/status/935224168043474945 …

They will include some toothless language to assuage him and he will vote yes. Utterly meaningless.

Rejecting a trigger in current environment means White House and leadership don't believe commitment made to Senate deficit hawks that the bill won't add to the deficit.

2001 is also year they started the war we are still in because they said there were WMDs (but there weren’t). The war Sarandon thought Hillary would put us in that we’ve been in 16+ years!

Huh, my memory must be failing me. Did anything happen in 2001 that might have thrown off 10-year budget projections from CBO?

Trigger is a dead horse. I think that was my line back then. When 9/11 hit that was the end of the surplus, and rightfully so.

Falling short is the point. Nuke the budget this year, use the resulting crisis as a pretense to gut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security next year.
