I was in Seoul when Obama wrapped up revisions to the S Korea free trade agreement. It was always as much about NK & diplomacy as economics.

Trade is a weapon against our enemies, tying together our friends. That does mean tradeoffs but that benefit shouldn't be dismissed.

I had issues w/ TPP but it was pretty obvious it was more about linking economies in Pacific to the US as a check on China.

Australia, arguably strongest US ally, is trying to equidistant between US & China in disputes. Trade links w/ China changed behavior.
