He can’t accept race, even if you tell him. Everyone is white in his world or he thinks they should be.

The reason it was troubling is that he only points out an exception to white - repeatedly - thus demonstrating a subconscious assumption that white = normal that is far too common still but should not be unchallenged in a freakin NYT editor.

Despite what u imply, races of challengers & incumbents are mostly the same, btw. Clay's challenger is Black. Beatty's challenger is Black. Cuellar's challenger is Latinx. Neal & Lipinski's challengers are white. Oops, Engel (white) challenged by Justice-backed Black dude.
