do you think the Hmong farmers in Minnesota are more Midwestern than the Somalis in Minneapolis? What about the Somali farmers? Does their ruralness change their status for you? Here's a piece on Somali farmers.https://www.minnpost.com/new-americans/2018/06/help-farmer-training-programs-more-minnesota-somalis-are-putting-down-roots-li/ …

Your outlet ran that wonderful story around anti-Muslim discrimination in St. Cloud. Do you see how your tweets link to that discriminatory mindset? I think these are reasonable questions to consider. I don't of course expect an answer.

It’s a small thing, but I think of an article in the NYT years ago breathlessly talking about the latest food trend to arrive in America (meaning NYC): banh mi. Banh mi had been a staple here in the Twin Cities for 10 or 20 years at that point.
-
To that writer and editor, banh mi were invisible when they were Midwestern, new and foreign when they hit NYC. After that, I saw the NYT with new eyes: speaking globally but thinking locally. These are people trying to cover the world who think Queens is far.
-
I really miss the public editor. It’s not clear to me they had any actual effect on the quality of the coverage, but at least they occasionally got to call out this kind of crap in the paper’s own pages:https://publiceditor.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/11/20/new-york-times-minnesota-grape-salad/ …

The other weekend NYT literally had a headline that asked whether the “browning” of Sweden was a burden. It’s gotten really awful.

The article contains this gem. He also came back to defend it in a separate tweet. "To be clear."pic.twitter.com/FYC0fzFbU4

“Ellison is a ¡BLACK MUSLIM!, but I wasn’t trying to frame it in religious or racial terms.” is one hell of a take.
-
Ellison was also born in Detroit, which is a rust belt city the last time I checked. It's a many layered racist cake.
