This, by the way, is no criticism of @JaneMayerNYer's epic piece on 'Affaire Franken. But the Twitteratti's notion that Leeann Tweeden or Kirsten Gillibrand single-handedly brought a senator down is not grasping the events of those 3 weeks.

Great precedent. No due process, death penalty no matter what the nature of charges. If you want to defend that, go ahead.
-
Franken dithered for three weeks after the Tweeden allegations surfaced, and never offered a coherent account of his behavior as new claims continued to surface. THAT is what did him in.
-
I read the whole piece, and responded to it in a thread here:https://twitter.com/studentactivism/status/1153287094682492928 …
-
But the upshot is as I said: That for whatever reasons, Franken never, in the three weeks between the Tweeden allegations surfacing and his resignation, provided anything approaching the kind of explanation for his behavior that he begins to provide in today's piece.
-
Upshot is those of you who were SO happy to presume guilt when he was repeatedly asking for full ethics investigation look pretty darn silly today. All of you put him in a position of needing to thread a needle, while in shock and people calling for his head, in heat of
#MeToo

That’s all they are defending at this point. Their obsession with sensationalism that destroyed a good man’s career. Instead of accepting that the were terribly wrong, they keep pretending like denying due process and the political lynching were justified.

I just watched Donald Trump waltz into a wedding, grab the bride, smack/grab her ass, and swoop in for a kiss. The President. Who has been accused by two dozen women of rape or assault. Who has admitted he thinks he is allowed to take what he wants. Where is the outrage?
-
I see plenty of outrage from our side, but no willingness of the GOP to confront it.

And every one of those women? We never heard a word from them again. Sorry, I’m not buying all of their stories. I generally believe women, but this whole episode was smarmy from the beginning.
-
What exactly do you expect from them? Would you prefer that they go on tour or something?
-
None of them agreed to be interviewed for this article. Most of them remain un-named. I find it curious and a bit too politically convenient.
-
Why in God's name would any of them want to be publicly identified? Who the hell would risk having their life ruined that way?
-
That’s very true. I’m no fan of what happened to Al, but coming forward just gets you death threats.

And yet... Trump and Brett Kavanaugh were rewarded after the same drumbeats.
-
Just remember, regardless of any justified accusations against Al Franken, this was a coordinated GOP effort to remove him after his questioning of Jeff Sessions during confirmation hearings which ultimately led to his recusal. Sessions couldn't protect Trump like Barr is now.

Double standards? Where're the drumbeats for Gym Jordan, who has been accused of knowing young wrestlers under his charge were being molested by their coach & did nothing? How about his nibs, trump, the admitted predator of women who's been accused of raping a minor girl?
-
People keep making these comparisons and it doesn't work. Just because republicans have no ethics doesn't mean Democrats shouldn't also. We have no control over them but we can keep our own house in order.
