Protests from @ajentleson aside, this surprises no Hill reporter nor did we report his position on Merrick Garland credulously. We all understood his blockade was partisan, not principled. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/29/us/politics/mitch-mcconnell-supreme-court.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share … via @nytimes

Hi Jonathan! The NYT wrote a entire standalone story on the Biden rule, dedicating a whole story to a 25-year old speech and legitimizing it as a GOP counterargument. I remember reading this piece. It bestowed legitimacy and others followed the NYT’s lead.https://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/23/us/politics/joe-biden-argued-for-delaying-supreme-court-picks-in-1992.html …

Nowhere in the piece does it characterize the blockade as partisan. Many reporters thought it was a clever tactic and were amused by the gamesmanship. The attitude was not “well this is transparent bulmshit,” it was, “your move, Democrats!”

"We need rational, adult, open-minded consideration of the constitutional process,” said Mr. Kirk. “He’s been duly nominated by the elected president of the United States to fill a vacancy which we know exists on the court.”https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/30/us/politics/republican-senator-meets-with-garland-and-urges-colleagues-to-follow.html?action=click&module=RelatedCoverage&pgtype=Article®ion=Footer …

In the inside-out ways of Washington, Grassley might have been trying to make doing something — holding a substantive conversation with the president’s nominee — look like doing nothing, to avoid drawing the ire of Republican leaders.https://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/13/us/politics/senator-chuck-grassley-merrick-garland-meet.html …
