Godding up top tier recruits who pass on races is not how you inspire confidence in what may be perfectly fine second choices. Keep in mind that State Senator Barack Obama was nobody's first choice to take back IL's Senate seat in 2004.
Think how the 2020 terrain would look if @GovernorBullock was challenging Steve Daines In Mont., @Hickenlooper was challenging Cory Gardner In Colo., and @staceyabrams was challenging David Perdue in Ga. both parties would be clicking on all cylinders.

I admired Bullock for his unvarnished reply to Maddow about why he is not running for the Senate. He has no interest in being a legislator. He likes being an executive and wielding power directly. That might apply to the other two as well.
