    (((JonathanWeisman))) Retweeted Liz Cheney

Honest question: I’m not sure how or when “Democrat Party” became a Republican pejorative but if a GOP leader is making an appeal across party lines, why doesn’t she use “Democratic leaders”?https://twitter.com/Liz_Cheney/status/1094796808851730432 …

I’m not defending this Jonathan but this goes far back to DeLay, Lott, Gingirch. Heck, Dole used to say “Democrat wars”. This isn’t new. It’s actually really old. What’s your point?

My point isn’t that it’s new. I think it goes back to Reagan but it has always been used as a slight. So if Cheney is trying to convince Democratic leaders to join in the condemnation, why use the pejorative “Democrat leaders”? It makes the overture sound unserious.

It actually goes back to the 1950s. They’ve been doing this for a very long time.

the rudeness is a signal the appeal is made in bad faith. (Calling someone by the name you prefer to call them, not by what they're actually named, defines rudeness.)

Yes, that’s clearly the pejorative at issue here. 🙄

House Democratic leaders should, in fact, condemn Omar’s statements, but Liz Cheney has no moral authority on this issue whatsoever and should focus on the systemic racism in her own party.

Agree. Mulvaney did the same thing today. It's idiotic. If that's the only way Republicans can show they are Republicans they are in deep trouble.

Criticizing Israel does not automatically make any criticism of it antisemitic. It’s a country; Not a religion and can make bad policy just like all other countries

I’ve never quite understood this. If Democrats started calling the GOP the “Republic Party,” would that be pejorative? Would it be taken as such?

I think the GOP uses it as a slur simply because Democratic Party folks don't like it. "Democrat" is hardly "libtard," "Demonrat" or whatever other bile they've got. A waste of time issue in my opinion.
