C'mon. I graduated high school in NC in 1989. I have never seen someone in blackface in person. It's not common.
I graduated from a Georgia high school in 1983. People say, this was the 80s, not the 1880s. But that betrays a misunderstanding of the South. I was in law school in Atlanta at the time. I regularly was called a Yankee. I remember having to call my dad twice about Jewish slurs I heard but didn’t understand. Working part-time as an assignment editor, I’d get media advisories about weekend Klan rallies at Stone Mt.
