I wrote a piece on the pending Great Schism between the world's last two large Jewish communities, in Israel and America. I will now stop looking at my notifications. Have fun everybody.https://nyti.ms/2RxXOCC

Can't blame you for not wanting to look at your notifications, Mr. Weisman, as your reference to the Pittsburgh Platform is, at best, misleading. Its principal tenet--much beloved by the Sulzbergers, admittedly--that Jews are not a "people" was rejected over the years by US Jews.

Terrific piece. My complaint: "schism" is not geographic - between Jews who live in US, Jews who live in Israel. It's between Bibi/Trump Jews w/right-of-center ethnonationalist views and Jews w/more tolerant/liberal worldview, views. Both groups fighting in both countries.

This piece is the equivalent of painting by numbers. Or reading bad Jewish History Cliff Notes. The Pittsburgh Conference of 1885 indeed

Riiiiiight coming from the guy who didn't know Alice Walker is an anti-Semite. Who thinks being Jewish is about bagels and lox and 'social justice.' Hard pass.

Hi Jonathan, I think you may have intentionally, or unintentionally dissolved the fact that in Aug '18, the USA contributed $38 Billion to the Israeli military. "American Jews don’t serve in the Israeli military, don’t pay Israeli taxes." We actually do subsidize Israeli taxes.☮️

Its a temporary political divide, & one that is overstated by those in the political echo chamber on both sides. Much of your article also focuses on Netanyahu and Trump, as new leaders come, opinions change. Far greater divide in America right now b/w the coasts & middle america

We’ll see about America. A talented politician for Democratic nominee for US with anti-corruption pro-worker policies and Medicare for All plus a complete Trump meltdown might make GOP a ghost and Fox the next MySpace

Well, the ability of GOP idiots to sweep W’s catastrophic 8 years of massive failures and ignore how Reaganomics finally ended in the Great Recession is almost supernatural. You people AREimpervious to reality.

The recession happened because the govt mandated that ppl with bad credit be given home loans in the name of diversity. What we have now is Reaganomics on steroids & things are pretty damn good.

No, that has been proven completely wrong. The mandated loans were fine. Mortgage-backed securities had NOTHING to do with gov req. You would have to accept facts to get that, though, so you’d waste your time if you read the evidence.

There were a myriad of reasons for the recession, but those shaky loans were not fine. If you can't afford a house, you just can't. Such is life.

The shaky loans were crazed things like negative amortization mortgages. Banks made money on the fees, then got rid of the risk by making sausage out of them and selling these mortgage-backed securities paying Moodys for false top ratings. Just greed of rich people. Nothing else
