  Sullivan falls back on the arch-conservative trope that liberalism is based on Christianity. Talal Asad persuasively wrote (in Formation of Secular) that Christianity sees all humans as inherently sinful and in need of a savior. Liberalism has a problem with saved/lost dichotomy.
