The responses to this tweet prove my point. Jeff Flake has been for low taxes, free markets and much less spending for decades. He wants a conservative judiciary and opposes abortion. He is pro-international trade. Why would he vote against those policies?

True. But he needn’t vote against his beliefs. He could threaten to caucus with democrats (with McCain, for instance) and they would yield to his calls. THAT would be meaningful and principled.
-
Oh right, that thing where any two GOP senators could stop this shitshow today if they wanted to.

No one is asking him to curb his beliefs. And yes, speeches are a form of action. But if Trump’s actions are as destructive as he says, and they are, then speeches are not sufficient action. He should take concrete steps, even if that compromises his conservative agenda.
-
In short, if he thinks this is an emergency, he should act like it. It’s the disconnect between the need for action his rhetoric suggests and his actual inaction that has made him an avatar of hypocrisy.

When he votes with the party he increases Trump's power. Besides, they're voting for non-conservative things like a tax cut in a good economy.

Okay but he votes for an anti-free trade trade rep, and Flake is strongly pro-trade. So that’s not voting in line with his conservative beliefs, it’s being a toady.

No,
@JeffFlake gets grief because he says these things and then jumps on the Trump bandwagon and votes all of his crazy nutbags into positions into the Cabinet or the Supreme Court. That is the issue. Jeff Flake does not practice what he preaches.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

No one is asking him to become a liberal. Literally we’re asking him to use the immense leverage he has with a razor-thin majority in the Senate to force Republicans to stop capitulating to Trump and become serious about governing the country.

@jonathanweisman@maggieNYT That’s a false choice. Of course Flake should vote for policies in which he believes. But why is that an excuse for him always voting to confirm crooked, unqualified, and/ Constitution-crushing Trump nominees? Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

He gets grief because he *rightly* uses alarmist language to outline the very real dangers of the moment, but then does not use what leverage he has to do anything about it. More Noble than the rest of the GOP, perhaps, but that's a remarkably low bar.

Would it make a difference if Trump and everyone else knew every Republican in Congress would never take any action to back their speeches? Trump would call them losers and we would continue on this terrible path.

@JeffFlake & the@GOP / Trumpublicans, offers his thoughts & prayers but nothing else. As one of the survivors of the Annapolis shooting which killed 5 journalists said - "Fuck your prayers." Grand themed speeches are doing nothing. Start demanding better fm ur colleagues.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

No, it wouldn’t, unless they backed up their words with actions. Trump doesn’t care what they think. And his core voters will pick him over them.

It doesn't seem particularly brave to vote for Trump's nominees in the morning, then denounce him in the afternoon. It shouldn't be hard to draw a connection between Trump appealing to conservatives' beliefs, and how Trump won the nomination and remains in power.

Flake wants to be POTUS so he opposes the obvious unfit and incompetent traitor Trump in words - but he wants wingnut voters down the road, so he votes wingnut - EVERY.SINGLE. TIME. Hypocrisy, disingenuousness, and perfidy...

if you vote with bad people so long as it benefits your ideals then you are part of the problem. It doesn’t matter what your rhetoric is when nothing is on the line.
