This is a crucial point. The conservative defense of untrammeled property rights against democratic encroachment is a key underpinning of right-wing authoritarianism: http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2016/10/the-gops-age-of-authoritarianism-has-only-just-begun.html … https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1149712128036757504 …

Do you listen to yourself? Opposing the encroachment on property rights is “authoritarian”? Good luck with that argument

How do you go from protecting property rights to authoritarianism? Protecting individual rights seem to be directly opposite?

Property rights are not absolute and may be properly abridged, within limits, through the democratic process. But the Right holds they are absolute (at least for those on their side) and so it is the democratic process that should be abridged --> authoritarianism.

And yet not a peep about people losing family farms and ranches along the US/Mexico border. Oh, but wait, they're probably Hispanic, so...https://www.texastribune.org/2018/09/08/trumps-border-wall-threatens-end-texas-families-250-years-ranching-rio/ …

Every word of this essay still rings true, with the notable exception of the likely outcome of the 2016 election. 😞

Right-wing authoritarians may well use a defense of property rights as a fig-leaf to help gain political power, but the principle itself is the completely counter to authoritarianism.

It's funny that this only lasts until the government is seizing property to ~build the wall~ or civil forfeiture targeted at average people or when the government pays billions to private companies to imprison people to be used for forced labor. 🤔

Liberalism = "possessive individualism" I remember being shocked by C. B. Macpherson back when I was young and shockable.

Property rights are a basic underpinning of a free society. There’s nothing authoritarian about it.
