I often hear about the study showing that blind auditions vastly increased women's chances of getting selected. I decided to actually read the whole study. … Turns out it doesn't show that at all. The findings are in both directions and not significant.

Local land use regulations are of national importance: "If America’s three most productive cities relaxed their planning regulations to the same level as the median U.S. city, real per capita income [for *all* Americans] would rise by about 8.2%."

Are hundreds of the best data scientists in the world making the McNamara fallacy (focusing only on what can be measured)? They can measure increased engagement by autoplay, but not the loss from people not using their site caused by it. A priori unlikely, but it seems so.

I'm a state capacity libertarian! (True that we need a term with this meaning, and it is described very well. But I'm still somewhat skeptical that it will catch on though.)

Every podcast: Guest: Forks are overall better than knives. Interviewer: Isn't there a potential advantage to knives though. For example if you are eating a steak, they can cut better. Guest: You bring up a a great and important point.

Some people claim that, as long as it's done by private companies, censorship is not a problem. In this post, I argue that, if you are opposed to censorship by the government, then you should also be against censorship by big tech companies.

The number of coincidences required for Epstein's death to be a suicide, already made it highly unlikely. (See calculations in image.) But now we have to multiply these by an additional rare event (that it's deemed to look like a murder even though it's a suicide). Not likely.

Remember that famous study about how “blind” orchestra auditions changed everything for women? It’s spurious. Thanks to data scientist for his meticulous analysis. . Discusses in latest Factual Feminist:

Not surprising: Nobel-Prize winning research is rejected by the current academic publishing system. Possibly surprising: we scientists are too stupid to reject the current academic publishing system.

People hate this on my timeline. But isn't it kind of weird that religions are tax exempt to begin with? Take Freudian psychoanalysis or healing crystals: Nonsense, but not quite crazy enough to be tax exempt. But have some insane story about xenu and thetans, then you can be!
