Any movie producers, book authors or artists needing scientific advice on spiders or insects? With my expertise in invertebrate biology, kinematics (and some years of making movies and drama in my student years), I am here to help. [please re-tweet]

An extremely cool study by : testing how 77(!) different spider species made silk shows that dragline silk is more diverse than previously thought! Big implications for biotech. More stories like this in :

Jumping spiders that build planar 'orb webs' as retreats? How crazy is that!!!

Yet another over-hyped story about Australian . These are not aggressive & they cannot jump or climb up walls. No one has died from a funnel-web spider bite since was introduced 40 years ago! Some perspective please!

Spiders have different silk glands producing silks with quite distinct properties. It depends on the species and its evolutionary history how a spider makes use of these different glands to form strong lines and web anchors. Thx for inviting:

YES, there still is more LIFE in than in many other places of the world.

Cycling home along the shoreline, while the sun sets golden after a clear smokefree day, and seeing (and hearing) the wildlife foraging on every corner, like pelicans, galahs, ibises, black swans, and - the grand finale - a never ending swarm of flying foxes, was so delightful!

I know it pales in comparison to the bushfires, but after the 46°C day yesterday all the spiders in my garden died. And I can't bring myself to think about the broader implications of these heatwaves

Wood - trap jaw SPIDERS have evolved LaMSA (energy storage) driven predatory strikes several times. Comparison of two NZ spiders-sister species, one has a latch and one doesn’t. 3D printouts, lovely histology, and high speed video reveals latch and loading muscle.

Ok, I am resolving this. It is Toxops montanus, a species only known from the western highlands of Tasmania. Its weird mix of characters have puzzled arachnologists and placed it in all sorts of families, until it ended up with its own family, the Toxopidae.
