I dont know the context - have i said otherwise? But- if you wanna create a exe file named program with arb content I would try and cause chkdsk to run during boot, any bsod will do the trick. This gives you this nice filepic.twitter.com/ND2UFQdo5P

Sure, you cannot rename it to program.exe - that would require permission to create a file there. What you can do though is to assign another shortname. No - dont use fsutilpic.twitter.com/OWpe2hoYj1

You haven't said otherwise, you have a high Windows internals status in my infosec circles and I thought you may know why the ACE doesn't allow creating files. Thank you for the tips though, very appreciated! Sadly the method can't be used on this specific system.

I think it was done to prevent exactly that attack with unquoted paths- would love to see the class reanimated with that trick. there is some quirks with permissions on volume roots. you cannot append to a file in the root because of needing HIGH integrity
