WIN32 paths inherently unreliable for linking a running process to the filename used to spawn it. Letter based drive association are per LUID, per process and in no way static. Thats part of why NT paths are used for loading drivers. They have their own problems though.pic.twitter.com/SkTEJvXG9c

Here \SystemRoot is used to specify the drive Windows is installed on. It goes through 2 layers of indirection before resolving to the actual device. These symbolic links are owned by Administrators and no Process trust label is specified.pic.twitter.com/nvQt0A2UqF

What they resolve to is used for decisions otherwise protected by process trust label though. You cannot change what an symbolic link targets- we have to delete and recreate. These links have been created with the permanent attribute though- that gives a fake +1 in refcount.

So- to delete the symlink first call NtMakeTemporaryObject, that will decrement the ref count back to normal. If the link \device\bootdevice is changed to point at the UEFI partition \device\harddiskvolume1

Then a driver, using the systemroot link, is started- the file will be attempted loaded from the uefi partition. By putting our own driver in the same folder as the existing on c: we now load another then intended, without installing it as a service.pic.twitter.com/kT7xU4VHy4

The fact that it is not the intended driver that loaded and is executing is almost impossible to spot. As c: have never been a part of the resolving- any attempt to show the location as a win32 path have to be based on assumptions- assumptions that now are wrong.pic.twitter.com/hkaZwqmv6w

This is not umpass.sys on c: that is loaded, every single tool to show loaded drivers make that assumption though.pic.twitter.com/dm0zxj74AD

The actual loaded driver is RW-everythings blocked driver, stored on the UEFI partition.pic.twitter.com/OYtF5KTPaA

A dual combo can be made if you have enabled defenders anti tamper. By redirecting the link- then unloading defenders mini filter antitamper will now load the wrong file instead of defenders minifilter. Now defender is passive and your driver loaded.
