Have any of you experienced anything like this? My system gets converted to a virtual system and boots up under hypervisor. C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ef02f8d02134254e816a122b3eb99adc\WindowsUpdateBox.Exe Prepares it all, then on boot I am a VM

this has happened for years, but only after you install hyper-v. is this a different circumstance?

Is this because of Virtualisation Based Security (VBS) getting automatically activated? I experienced this once on my Surface Go (not sure if it is exact same as your experience) and I turned it off by disabling hypervisor from BCD.

The latest version of Windows Hypervisor messes up with kernel mode drivers access to MSR, and I created an app to tune the voltage to keep the battery life long and the system cool. One day I realised that the system is warmer than usual, and that’s how I noticed.

This morning my windows install triggered an update which left me in a bootloop. do you know of any indicator I can check on a non-booting drive (I'm just ditching that install at this point) to see if it's the same root cause?
-
will check for that file once I have the drive accessible, but wondering if there's anything else obvious
