NTFS- you cannot supersede / overwrite / replace a file with a directory nor the reverse. But if you rename a directory so it overwrites a file it works fine

No- a rename cannot not follow symlinks, but its not relevant unless you also have a symlink mitigation bypass because it requires privelegie to make. If you have the option to do symlinks I have posted better ways to priv esc with it in my stream- and a writeup.
