Both are important. However much you work, you’ll never independently discover everything that’s been discovered by every other person who’s ever been in your field. Creating your own ideas is great, but sometimes it’s more efficient to read someone else’s.
yes- some times, I dont think this is one of them though... The people that have that weird combination of autismn, focus, windows internals facination, coding skills and love for impossible challenges are rarely the same type that write an entire book.

The required skill sets are also spanning over so many topics the only thing that really pays off is the "learn fast skill"- not that I dont read books, sure I do-

books about windows internals are nice spice, but the field is just moving too fast for the dead tree recycling industry to have a chance. My experience is that for this exact topic blog posts, articles, zine, pocs, msdn etc gives most relevant skill for the minute.
