Apologies for my ignorance here, but how do you get a system terminal?
many ways- i prefer using process hacker, right click somethig running as system and choose run as this user

Ah right, that makes sense. I'm guessing process hacker uses something like the Windows API CreateProcessAsUser or CreateProcessWithTokenW functions to do so.
